Certified Divorce Financial Analyst

Getting a divorce can be just as devastating financially as it is emotionally. As a matter of fact, fear of not getting a fair settlement and being penniless after the divorce are the two big reasons that divorce negotiations cost so much money, take so long and become downright nasty. People are starting over and have very little facts about their future financial lives; facts about the value of their assets, the tax changes they will face after divorce, or if they can even afford to pay their bills each month.

“How will I be able to afford to live and how do I know I’m getting a fair deal?”  Divorce causes uncertainty and these are the two most commonly asked questions. Since divorce means dissolving the one household and making two and making it work requires knowledge, planning and sacrifices. Many states are equitable distribution states. This means that the division of assets should be done according to the needs of the two individuals. There are even lists of factors for different states that can influence how the assets will be divided.  What looks good on paper isn’t always a good deal. The devil is in the details and all the details must always be considered in the property division.

Feeling overwhelmed and confused is normal. Divorce is a complicated emotional, financial and legal event. Coping is tough when everything is changing at once.

Joan Coullahan is a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, a financial planner who specializes in analyzing the financial issues of the divorce process and educating couples and individuals about their present and future financial lives. A long time financial educator, she is a recognized expert at providing the important financial facts that clients need to know.  Joan enables persons going through the divorce process to understand the essential issues of their situation, resulting in a fairer and more financially equitable settlement.
